Formal Tribute: Professor Robert (Bob) Flanagan

The College of Mental Health Pharmacy (CMHP) are saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Robert J. Flanagan PhD ERT MCSFS CChem FRSC FRCPath FRCP Edin HFCMHP Hon FFFLM, an internationally respected expert in clinical toxicology, and the College’s sole Honorary Fellow.

Professor Flanagan was based at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where he worked within Precision Medicine and Networked Services, contributing over many years to the advancement of toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, and the safe use of high-risk medicines.

His appointment as an Honorary Fellow of CMHP recognised a level of distinction and contribution beyond that of conventional Fellowship routes. He held a unique position within the College as its only Honorary Fellow, reflecting both the breadth of his expertise and the significant influence he had on mental health pharmacy practice.

Professor Flanagan’s work had a profound impact on the understanding of psychotropic medicines, particularly clozapine. His contributions to pharmacology, toxicology, and therapeutic drug monitoring informed clinical practice nationally and internationally, supporting safer, evidence-based care for patients with complex mental health needs.

He remained actively engaged with the CMHP community throughout his career, regularly contributing to professional discussions and sharing expert insight with generosity and clarity. His contributions were characterised not only by their scientific depth, but also by their accessibility, supporting clinicians in real-world decision-making and strengthening professional practice across the community.

Alongside his professional legacy, colleagues have reflected on his warmth, generosity and personal impact. Many remember his kindness to early-career pharmacists and his ability to put others at ease, including welcoming new members at CMHP conferences and supporting them through thoughtful conversation and encouragement.

He was also remembered for the relationships he built across the College and the lasting influence of his teaching and mentorship. His willingness to share time, knowledge and curiosity extended beyond formal roles, whether through professional discussions or informal interactions that shaped the CMHP community.

Professor Flanagan’s contribution to the College extended beyond professional engagement. He personally gifted the CMHP President’s seal to the College, working with Council on its development. This act reflected his deep commitment to CMHP and represents a lasting legacy, symbolising the College’s leadership, identity and continuity.

Nicola Greenhalgh, CMHP President, said:

“I would like to extend the Council’s sincere condolences to Bob’s family, friends and colleagues.
It is important to recognise the remarkable contribution Bob made—not only to the Council, but to individual members across our community. He provided thoughtful, practical support that will undoubtedly have improved the lives of countless patients.

We are deeply grateful for the time, expertise and generosity he shared with us all. His absence will leave a significant gap within the community, one that will be difficult to fill.

I am sure each of us will reflect on our personal experiences of Bob and remember him—especially in moments that reflect his passion and commitment, not least when we see a clozapine level.”

Professor Flanagan’s passing is a significant loss to the field of mental health pharmacy. His legacy will endure through the lasting impact of his work, the knowledge he shared, and the many professionals he influenced throughout his career.

The College extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
