Portfolio File No. 1 - Competencies

    1. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate and apply a thorough knowledge of drug treatment of all major mental illnesses. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate knowledge of the relevant pharmaceutical aspects of drug treatment choice
      • Demonstrate awareness of the principles of prescribing quality and embeds this into routine practice.
    2. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate evidence of effective communication skills in complex situations. The candidate will be able to:
      • Provide evidence of effective involvement within a multidisciplinary environment
      • Provide evidence of experience of effective communication with service users, carers and other professionals involved in the care of service users
      • Demonstrate clear, concise and effective written and oral communication skills.
    3. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate active involvement in the provision and development of the pharmaceutical aspects of mental health care. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate a wide experience of the provision of pharmaceutical services in mental health.
    4. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate a commitment to care, sensitivity and empathy with people with complex mental health needs. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate a commitment to patient care.
      • Demonstrates the ability to sensitively manage patients through a range of situations such as during periods of mental health crisis or where restricted through use of the mental health act or criminal justice system.
      • Demonstrate the ability to manage patients with co-existing mental health and physical health illnesses or needs.
      • Demonstrate an understanding of holistic risk assessments of patients with complex needs.
    5. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate a vision for the future development of pharmaceutical mental health care. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate initiative in their work.

 Portfolio File No. 2 - Competencies

    1. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate and apply a thorough knowledge of drug treatment of all major mental illnesses. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacoeconomics
      • Demonstrate awareness of the principles of prescribing quality
      • Critically appraise and interpret published papers
      • Demonstrate how they use and apply evidence in their practice.

Portfolio File No. 3 - Competencies

    1. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate and apply a thorough knowledge of drug treatment of all major mental illnesses. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate awareness of the principles of prescribing quality
      • Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of drug treatments to clinical situations
      • Demonstrate the ability to effectively challenge prescribing decisions to ensure that service users achieve the best outcomes.
    2. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate evidence of effective communication skills. The candidate will be able to:
      • Provide evidence of productive involvement within a multidisciplinary environment
      • Give medicines information in an effective and clear manner and in a format that meets the needs of the requester
      • Provide evidence of the ability to deal with sensitive, complex and difficult conversations about medicines with a range of service users, carers and health care professionals
      • Demonstrate clear, concise and effective written and oral communication skills.
    3. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate active involvement in the provision and development of the pharmaceutical aspects of mental health care. The candidate will be able to:
      • Demonstrate a wide experience of the provision of pharmaceutical services in mental health
      • Plan local service development to meet changing needs in mental health care.
    4. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate a commitment to care and an empathy with people with mental health needs. The candidate will be able to:
      • Show empathy with patients and carers in their approach to provision of services
      • Demonstrate that the patient is central to decision making around medications
      • Demonstrate an ability to provide holistic care.
    5. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate a vision for the future development of pharmaceutical mental health care. The candidate will be able to:
      • Show a clear vision for personal and service development in the future of pharmaceutical mental health services.

Portfolio File No. 4 - Competencies

    1. A CMHP member will be able to demonstrate ongoing commitment to continuing professional development (CPD). The candidate will be able to:
      • Provide evidence of reflective learning.

Viva Competencies

  1. Through a series of case studies across a variety of mental health areas, followed about questions relating to the portfolio the following competencies will be assessed:
  • Demonstrate patient centred care taking a holistic approach to both the physical and mental health needs of the patient
  • Demonstrate the ability to consider treatment options in a range of mental health illnesses, and formulate and communicate an individualised treatment plan
  • Demonstrate the ability to undertake a risk assessment of a patient with an acute mental health illness
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex information about mental health medication in a sensitive manner
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the implications and application of the mental health act and mental capacity act to patients who have mental health illnesses.
